Signs of Paint Degradation

In this blog, we will identify the signs of paint degradation and when it’s time to repaint your business’ facade. There are a number of factors that will affect when you are due to repaint. The main factors are quality of previous workmanship, extreme climate and the original state of the painted surface.

So, what are the signs of paint degradation and when should you repaint your building’s exterior?

  1. The colour starts to fade
    Most people would consider faded paint to be a cosmetic issue but it’s much more than that. When the paint starts fading, it could be due to several causes. The most common cause is the use of low-quality paint which triggers premature degradation of the paint system. If your paint has a ‘dusty appearance’, it can no longer provide the level of protection your building needs. When you see this, it’s a good time to consider repainting.
  2. Mildew and/or mould growth
    Mildew
    and/or mould are those black, greenish, fuzzy looking growths that are often a result of excessive moisture (or poor air circulation). These fungi not only have adverse health effects, but they also affect the structural integrity of the building. This is one very clear sign it’s time to clean, prep and repaint!
  3. Cracking paint
    When you spot, those spidery cracks appearing on your walls or windows that’s another sign of paint failure. Even a few cracks can spread across large areas and lead to peeling paint. If your building gets to this stage, you will find that you have left your building without any protection against the elements. The result of cracking paint can be severe. Rain can create fungi and termites can find their way through little spidery cracks causing rotting wood, metal corrosion and even severe pest infestation. To prevent cracking paint, inspect your building a couple times a year so that it doesn’t get to this stage. Having a good prevention strategy could save yourself the costly expense of more extreme repairs.
  4. Bubbles / Blistering
    Bubbles / Blistering
    in the paint film is the result of the localised loss of adhesion. This occurs when the paint is either in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces, when the paint is exposed to humidity or rain (after the paint has been applied) or when moisture gets inside the walls and tries to escape you will see bubbles.
